LOCATION: Bemboka, N.S.W./A.C.T. DATE: 03-Mar-2010 The Bega Valley Shire Council in the New South Wales South East has lifted a boil water alert for the Bemboka community, west of Bega. The alert was issued more than two weeks ago, but New South Wales Health was not satisfied with residual chlorine levels in the supply until yesterday afternoon. There are now no outstanding boil water alerts in the region. The Council's Environmental Health Co-ordinator, Greg O'Donnell, says the community has responded well. "The Bemboka community has been very supportive, in so much as they've been aware of what's going on and we haven't had complaints," he said. "Council wants to thank the community, particularly during this difficult time. "They have worked with us to overcome this problem." LOCATION: Bega Valley, N.S.W./A.C.T. DATE: 17-Feb-2010 The Bega Valley Shire Council on the New South Wales far south coast has issued a boil water alert for people on the Bemboka, Bega, Kalaru and Tathra water supply systems for the next few days. The council says it is one of the first alerts of this kind for 15 years, but it is only a precautionary measure after the recent heavy rain. The rain also caused the sewerage system to overflow, and the council has discharged partially treated sewage into the Bermagui and Bega Rivers. Water Minister Phil Costa today announced the NSW Government is amending water restrictions to allow this activity. All other Level 3 restrictions remain in place and include: - Hand-held hosing of lawns and gardens and drip irrigation is allowed only on Wednesdays and Sundays before 10 am and after 4 pm
- Hosing of vehicles at residential premises is permitted only with a trigger nozzle or high-pressure water cleaning equipment (to a maximum of 10L/minute)
- Hosing residential building structures including windows, walls and gutters is allowed using a hose with a trigger nozzle or high-pressure water cleaning equipment (to a maximum of 10L/minute)
- No hosing of hard surfaces such as paths or driveways at any time
- No other watering systems or sprinklers are to be used at any time
- A permit from Sydney Water is required to fill new or renovated pools bigger than 10,000 litres
- No hoses or taps to be left running unattended, except when filling pools or containers.
